The artist could be positively represented in the music video saboteur as he is trying to raise awareness about the dangers of social media and how easy it is to create a false persona online and online bullying. This is clever from the producers as social media is a growing concept in society and is trying to make people aware of it which is good as it has a positive promotion of the artist.

The video from the song saboteur represents as someone having the same routine in their life and is jealous of other people who have their life sorted out and know what they are going to do. These representations are shown through many visual connotations such as standing near people which the lyrics say ‘know what they want’ suggesting how he is jealous of the fun that they are having through what they want to do. Furthermore, the use of the sunglasses covering is face could imply that he’s hiding behind a fake identity which he is hiding behind on social media and the jealousy of people online to other people and how he has to display himself as being ‘confident’ but however, he’s actually ‘insecure’ about himself on the inside due to the effects that social media has had on society and social life as everything is said and done online now.

Most main stream music videos are heavily influenced by intertextuality such as Iggy Azalea’s music video ‘Fancy’ with the scenes from ‘clueless’. However, Aaron Taos rarely uses intertextuality in his video as it is mainly him lip syncing to his song but there are a few moments that the audience can relate to such as the inclusion of a spiderman costume which the audience can; therefore, relate to the marvel franchise and spiderman and also the inclusion of a stormtrooper which has the intertextual reference of the spiderman franchise.

The message that the music video is trying to convey about social media and the negative impact that has on society as more people are worried about how they are online that trying to have a positive view of themselves and having the same appearance online than they have with their friends and family and not create this false persona of a person they wish they were. This is repeatedly referenced throughout the video through the actual lyrics themselves as they say that they are ‘confident and insecure’ which suggests that they are confident about how they appear online; however, insecure about what they are like to people and the artist criticises social media for playing a part in that and making this view that people should be a specific way and if they are not they will be judged. This is also reinforced through visual signifiers such as when he puts his sunglasses on, he is a completely different person just like hiding behind this mask which is a metaphor for hiding behind the power of social media.

The preferred reading of this music video is that it shows the affect of social media and how people are jealous and envious of people that they follow or see on their feed and think that they are worthless as they can not do that. The oppositional reading is that they reject all of these views and that social media can have a positive affect on people as they can voice their opinions in society.
